|SMALL THINGS FILLED WITH LONGING AND FEAR
| James R. Whitley
Hurricane flood waters washing away lifetimes then
receding without so much as an apology, shaky teens
dressed in soldier costumes on opposite sides of the
field as certain as sky that God is on their team, dread
mushrooming within like a dark cancerous growth—
definitive proof that the world is indeed a wilderness.
So the lavish wedding ceremonies and salsa dances,
the interrogation protocols and Hollywood premieres,
the lynchings, the governments, the prayers: all just
distractions for blinded children to occupy their time
with, as the setting sun takes its ball of answers away,
as the stars come out to stare at the madness below.
