Shuttered

D J Moser

Learn to predict a fire with unerring precision.
Then burn the house down to fulfill the prediction. – Czeslaw Milosz

I eye the eye the scanner of stares
fixed on the escalator going nowhere
reeling me out into a screen-filled room
where eyes eye me and perhaps they zoom
in for a closer look at the level of my fear
I may blow up or simply disappear
into their grainy archives just in case
someone wants a better look at my face
in this captured moment returning home
along fish-eyed aisles of glittering chrome
with eyes downcast in deepest dejection
observed by eyes for my protection
to show the embattled land of plenty
that hindsight is always twenty-twenty
